Business II, Week 1 – The 3 Areas of Business

Write a 250-word essay on how the 3 areas of business apply to a business in your city. This can be a family business, a well-known business, or your favorite business.

In my town there is a quaint little shop called the Hungry Hollow. The shop is pretty well known by the locals, and it is one of my favorite businesses in town. In this essay I will be discussing how the three areas of business apply to the Hungry Hollow. There are many areas of a business, but for this essay I will be referring to the three main areas. Sales and marketing, operation, and finance and administration. The sales and marketing part of a business is responsible for advertising the product or service, and bringing in customers. The operation part is how the business makes the product or service, and how they get it to the customer. Finally, the finance and admin part of the business is responsible for budgeting, hiring employees, and just managing things in general. Now let’s see how the Hungry Hollow applies these areas of business.

The Hungry Hollow advertises organic, locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as many prepared food items that are considered healthy. They advertise typically unhealthy food but with healthier alternatives to the unhealthy ingredients. They advertise premade sandwiches or soups with different diet themes. The Hungry Hollow targets health nuts and people who want to use more natural ingredients as opposed to overly processed ingredients and chemicals. They even have a section of natural soaps, shampoos, and other personal hygiene products.

Although they have been advertising a website recently, Hungry Hollow is for the most part a brick-and-mortar business. They have a small house-like building were they sell their goods, and a sitting area outside next to the small parking lot. The inside of the shop feels very cozy and quaint, very much unlike franchises such as ShopRite or Wegmans. As far as I know, Hungry Hollow does not have any other locations, so they feel more special in the sense that this is the only Hungry Hollow you will come across.

The Hungry Hollow is a lower budget shop, with the same lady in the kitchen making soup, the same guy stocking shelves, and a few cashiers to switch out. However, their low budget does not stop them from always having something new to advertise, and offering deals and discounts.

In conclusion, the Hungry Hollow adheres well to the three areas of business I talked about today: sales and marketing, operation, and finance and administration. They advertise their natural and organic products, sell them at their cozy little shop for reasonable prices, and manage their finances nicely.
