English 1, Lesson 65 – Washington’s Black Acceptance Program

Writing assignment. Write 100 words on this topic: “Was Washington’s program for gaining social acceptance for blacks an elitist program?

Washington had a simple program for gaining social acceptance for blacks. An individual who could do a marketable trade, and do it better than someone else would be successful. Perhaps not very easy, but definitely simple.

This was not an elitist program, as he did not say that only certain people or certain trades could climb the social ladder. He believed anyone could be successful no matter their status, skin color, or gender. To help black people and ex-slaves of all ages and gender, Washington founded Tuskegee institute, a school run by the students. The students farmed crops to feed themselves, built the buildings and maintained them, and they produced bricks to sell to fund their school.

In conclusion, Washington’s program for gaining social acceptance for blacks was not an elitist one because he believed anyone who made themselves better than someone else in any marketable trade would be accepted by society.
